MVP Focus

When designing a new system, focusing only on the essential flows that deliver immediate value is crucial.

When designing a new system, focusing only on the essential flows that deliver immediate value is crucial rather than over-engineering with flows that may not be needed in the first iteration. Adopting an MVP mindset ensures the system is designed for rapid deployment, validation, and iteration, allowing for continuous evolution based on real-world feedback. A system should not attempt to solve every possible future use case from the beginning but instead prioritize only what is needed to validate its core value proposition.

A new system should include only:

  • Critical business flows that are necessary for the system to function.
  • The minimum set of actors required to execute those flows.
  • Key objectives that are essential for business validation rather than long-term aspirations.

For example, when launching a new e-commerce platform, the initial MoSy system view should focus on essential flows such as product discovery, checkout, and order fulfillment. Later iterations can introduce advanced features like loyalty programs, third-party marketplace integrations, or AI-driven recommendations. By avoiding overdesign and focusing on the most valuable and testable flows, teams can quickly launch and refine systems without wasting time on unnecessary complexity.

This approach also enables smoother scaling, as additional flows and actors can be incorporated over time once the foundational system has been validated.
